Peterson House, the Blaxland Inn and Broke Road
Pokolbin, the centre of the Lower Hunter Valley wine region, lies at the foot of the Brokenback Range, 11.7 km (7.3 mi) west-north-west of Cessnock. Both operators meet on Broke Road there. Balloon Aloft gathers passengers at Peterson House, on the corner of Broke Road and Wine Country Drive. Beyond Ballooning uses the Blaxland Inn, 2198 Broke Road, which has been its meeting and breakfast venue since 3 March 2025. Each drives passengers out to the launch.
The launch field changes with the morning. Balloon Aloft picks one of more than a dozen launch areas to suit the conditions, and Beyond chooses its site by wind direction. Balloon Aloft names Pokolbin, Lovedale, Broke and Rothbury among the areas it flies, over vineyards, farmland, bushland, mountain ranges and national parks. Hunter Valley Wine Country describes Beyond's flights as crossing the Pokolbin and Broke wine regions, over vineyards and rolling countryside.
4 am in summer, 5 am in winter
Beyond Ballooning's meeting time is about 4:00 am in summer and 5:00 am in winter. The afternoon before, it texts the meeting place, time and weather status, with a waiver to fill in, and the pilot gives a safety briefing at pickup. Passengers can spend about 20 minutes helping to prepare the balloon if they wish. Balloon Aloft also launches at sunrise and quotes about 4 hours for the whole morning, including paperwork, the briefing, transfers and breakfast, the same total Beyond gives.
Time aloft is 45 to 60 minutes with Balloon Aloft and 40 to 60 minutes with Beyond. Breakfast, where booked, is back in Pokolbin. Balloon Aloft serves a gourmet breakfast with a sparkling wine tasting at Restaurant Cuvee in Peterson House and sends digital photos. Beyond's breakfast is a buffet at the Blaxland Inn, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices and a glass of local sparkling wine, and its daily flights come with a free digital photo package.
Steady summers, windy August and September
Balloon Aloft flies all year, and Beyond quotes meeting times for both summer and winter. Balloon Aloft says summer usually brings the most stable weather and the best odds of getting airborne, while August and September tend to be windier. Beyond's team checks conditions many times a day and calls to reschedule when they are unsuitable. Balloon Aloft cancels whenever conditions are unsafe and lets passengers rebook within the ticket's validity; Flexi Ticket holders may get a refund.
Balloon Aloft runs the Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta, three days with about 20 to 25 balloons taking off at dawn each morning and breakfast afterwards at Peterson House. Passengers can book flights during it. The fiesta returns in 2027 with dates still to be confirmed, and Balloon Aloft's page aims it at visitors coming to the Hunter Valley in October.
Refundable Flexi tickets and a 130 kg limit
Balloon Aloft's Flight Voucher, with breakfast, is AUD 299 at its current special price (listed at AUD 349) and is non-refundable, even for weather. Weather cancellations rebook within its 36-month validity. The Flexi Ticket is AUD 319 (listed at AUD 369) and fully refundable for weather or pilot cancellations, or AUD 359 with transfers from local accommodation and AUD 439 from Sydney. Neither ticket can be changed within 72 hours.
Beyond Ballooning charges AUD 299 for the flight alone or AUD 329 with breakfast and photos. It refunds weather cancellations or rebooks them within 12 months, except on gift certificates, and its booking page says date changes and cancellations may incur fees under its terms and conditions. Its balloons run from 2-seaters to 24 people including the pilot, and the limit is 130 kg per passenger. Private VIP flights for two cost AUD 1,899 on weekdays and AUD 2,999 at weekends.
Balloon Aloft takes children from 5 and 90 cm tall with an adult, and arranges a booster cushion for those between 90 and 120 cm. Beyond does not recommend flying under 7, because younger children cannot see over the basket, and does not fly pregnant passengers. Balloon Aloft says it can fly more than 100 people in a morning across more than a dozen balloons. It also flies an accessible basket with a door and seating on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which it calls the first in NSW, and its private Romantic Flight for Two costs AUD 2,200 on weekdays.
Before you book
- Balloon Aloft suggests comfortable casual clothes, flat closed-toe shoes (no heels or platforms) and layers, since mornings are cool before sunrise and warm up quickly.
- For a Balloon Aloft child between 90 and 120 cm tall, call the office to arrange a booster cushion.
- Beyond sends a waiver with its confirmation text the afternoon before the flight; fill it in before the morning.
- Beyond asks passengers to mention any health condition when booking, and does not fly anyone who is pregnant.
- Getting there. Pokolbin is 163 km (101 mi) north of Sydney, reached via the Pacific Motorway, and 64 km (40 mi) west of Newcastle.
